Community

Estudio Teorema is an independent space dedicated to the production, research, and promotion of the performing arts. It is based in the Colonia del Fresno neighborhood of Guadalajara, Mexico.

La Colonia del Fresno is a neighborhood where working-class families employed by Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México began settling in 1936. Surrounded by breweries, it appears to be physically separated from the neighboring neighborhoods. For many years, La Colonia del Fresno has been stigmatized by high crime rates.

On the other hand, this neighborhood has been a major hub for counterculture in Mexico. Starting in the 1980s, the collaborative fanzine “¡Que role!” was published and printed there; the first punk concerts took place in a warehouse; and the first graffiti artists and urban muralists began to move from the neighborhood to various public spaces.

Estudio Teorema draws on this legacy and sees itself as a space that builds bridges between artistic production, the local area, and community knowledge; we believe that art does not exist in isolation, but rather in constant dialogue with its surroundings.

From this perspective, the local community is not merely a setting; it is an active source of knowledge, imagination, and collective action. Our community engagement projects are developed in collaboration with children, neighborhood organizations, care networks, schools, local groups, and neighbors. These partnerships are a fundamental part of our identity and shape methodologies that blend the performing arts with education, emotional well-being, and community engagement.

Rather than simply bringing art to the community, we propose processes in which creation becomes a tool for bringing stories to light, rekindling memories, transforming relationships, and fostering new ways of being together. In each experience, we redefine what we mean by culture, politics, and the common good.
